CARMEL, Ind. -- A Carmel man now unofficially holds the record for the most amount of time spent in a roundabout.

Oran Sands spent over three hours in his 1987 Volkswagen Rabbit convertible Tuesday morning, traversing the 106th Street roundabout near his Carmel home… all for family bragging rights.

"It’ll just be something my kids can talk about, usually with rolled eyes," Sands said.

The idea to set the world record came to Sands when he got stuck in the roundabout one day and started going around and around.  His attempt also highlights the benefits of roundabouts, an infrastructure change championed by Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.

"We’re achieving an 80 percent reduction in injury accidents and a 40 percent reduction in all accidents," Brainard said.

Carmel now boasts a total of 94 roundabouts, more than any other U.S. city.  Sand’s record attempt was recorded and will be turned into Guinness World Book and Record Setter.
