Neighborhood revitalization efforts often raise the cost of living and push residents out. Developers in Indianapolis’ north eastside want to do the opposite.
Cook Medical and a handful of community partners are developing a manufacturing facility on Indianapolis' northeast side. It’s known as the 38th and Sheridan project.
Indiana University’s Public Policy Institute analyzed the project. The report states that the project aims to improve employment rates and wellbeing in the nearby community.
The development focuses on uplifting the community by providing job opportunities and much-needed resources.
Indiana University’s Public Policy Institute analyzed the developments in a recent report. Tom Guevara is the institute’s director.
“It represents a potentially unique but more impactful model for redevelopment and economic development in historically under invested or disinvested neighborhoods,” Guevara said.
Project leaders want to specifically hire members of the community near the facility and offer them wraparound services, like health care and education support.
A grocery store will also be built as a part of the project. That will provide employment opportunities and increase food access where grocery stores are limited. IU’s Public Policy Institute will release a report on the grocery store later this spring.
