Popular Mobile Garden Offers Flu Shots

A mobile produce delivery truck will be offering more than carrots and apples while making its rounds this week.

Providing healthy food options, and now healthcare, is the goal of Indiana University Health’s Garden on the Go. The popular service has sold more than 200 tons of affordable produce to communities in need since it hit the ground two years ago.Last month the truck added free flu shots to its inventory.

Garden on the Go is able to reach underserved neighborhoods with preventative health measures.  Lisa Cole, manager of Indianapolis community outreach for IU Health, says the service offers a chance to educate the public as well.

"We need to be proactive in our own health and take responsibilty," Cole said.

The truck is providing shots at 15 stops this week.  Organizers are hoping to expand to other services as well.  Garden on the Go operates weekdays, year-round stopping at the numerous indoor locations.  A schedule for this week's flu shots can be found online at iuhealth.org.
