Police Step Up Patrols In March

The month of March can be a dangerous time on Indiana highways that's why Indiana State Police will have a stronger presence on the roads.

Four people involved in impaired driving accidents, were killed on Hoosier highwasy during the first three weeks of March 2013.  That's the same stretch of time that state police plan to take part in Operation Pull Over.

March Madness and St. Patty's festivities seem to equal more drunk driving accidents.  Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Meyers says a lot of focus will be on the weekends.

"It seems like that's when our statistics rise, on the weekends, on DUI crashes, DUI arrests, so we're going to concentrate on the weekends, but there will still be officers out on the weekdays," says Meyers.

Police will be activating saturation patrols as well as sobriety checkpoints.  Common sense can go a long way too.  Tips for staying safe include having a designated driver or finding other ways of getting home.
