Police Cracking Down On Speeding In Work Zones

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana State Police are stepping up efforts to catch speeders driving in work zones after five deaths in the past two months, including those of two construction workers.

WTHR-TV reports a reporter accompanied a trooper on patrol Tuesday and during a short ride found most drivers speeding, with some going 20 miles an hour faster than the speed limit. Trooper Andry Forgey says it puts innocent lives at risk.

Forgey says state police are planning to give out more tickets in an effort to get drivers to slow down.

A U.S. Transportation Department study found speeding is a factor in more than one-third of work-zone fatalities. Last year, work zone crashes killed 13 people in Indiana, up from eight the year before.
