Online Forum Aims To Connect Neighbors, Stop Crime

The Department of Public Safety is partnering with an Indianapolis company to connect neighbors and combat crime.

An online forum called Band of Neighbors created by Angie’s List allows neighbors to share and ask questions about what is going on in their communities.

It is available in Indianapolis’ 840 neighborhoods and in 20,000 others across the country.

"Fighting crime in any city takes more than police," said Mayor Greg Ballard.  "It needs strong community partners.  It takes engaged neighbors to watch out for each other and let folks know what’s going on.”

Band of Neighbors is a free service and public safety messages from police and fire departments will only appear in the neighborhoods where the actions or warnings are effective.

"You as a neighbor can post information about what’s happening in your neighborhood whether it’s what’s the latest road construction to there was somebody in a strange car driving through the neighborhood and that made me feel uncomfortable.  Let’s all be on alert" said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks.  ”Neighbors banding together is what is going to make our community safer.”

You do not need to be an Angie’s List member to participate in the forum.
