The Hamilton Police Department is reporting “numerous" buffalo on the loose, ranging from Johnson Lake Road to East Bellefontaine Road, near Clark’s Landing in Hamilton.

Officials are urging caution in the general area, noting the buffalo are “not friendly” and “should not be approached,” as they can become aggressive.

As of early Monday afternoon, the buffalo had not yet been contained. If the search continues as sunlight fades, residents are asked to drive slowly, as their dark coats are difficult to spot at night.

A number of buffalo farms and ranches operate in northern Indiana, but the source of the buffalo breakout remains unknown. The Hamilton Police Department urges anyone who sees the buffalo to share the information with them. The non-emergency number is (260) 488-3721.
