Indianapolis Department of Public Works crews have started installing “no turn on red” signs at Indianapolis intersections. Nearly 100 signs will be put up, mainly in the downtown core.
The city passed the turn proposal in June, ahead of a state law going into effect that would have stopped the move. A proposal amendment changed the measure to include pedestrian safety priority areas where the turns could also be restricted. That could allow for more of the signage to be installed in the future.
The restriction of right turns on red aims to address an increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths.
Crews will be installing the signs over the next few weeks, weather permitting.
