Nickel Plate District tunnel in Fishers nearing completion

A pedestrian tunnel beneath 116th street in downtown Fishers will open soon

Fishers City officials gave an update to the Nickel Plate District trail construction currently underway.

The trail is expected to open in the spring of 2022 and includes a pedestrian tunnel beneath 116th street downtown.

Mayor Scott Fadness said the tunnel was critical to the trail.

“Forty thousand cars, approximately, go back and forth on 116th Street a day, and they go fast, yes they go fast, so we want to get our pedestrians safe and under the road,” Fadness said.

The mayor said the tunnel is wide and open with lots of light for safety.

The First Internet Bank headquarters and a boutique hotel are nearing completion.  An apartment and townhome complex is also being built.  A pedestrian bridge was constructed over the tunnel and a plaza.

Stairs with a built-in bike ramp will allow pedestrians and cyclists to access the trail at 116th Street.  Decking with seating overlooks the trail-level plaza and city officials said it will be a location for live music and community gatherings.

The Nickel Plate trail is expected to eventually extend through Noblesville to the north and Indianapolis to the south.
