The Newburgh Police Commission voted to suspend Chief Brett Sprinkle without pay at its public meeting Wednesday.
Police Commission President Tonya McGuire tells the Evansville Courier & Press that Sprinkle was suspended to allow the commission "to complete an investigation."
The police commission met in executive session before the public meeting to discuss "personnel issues."
The Newburgh Police Department said it has no comment.
Calls to Sprinkle's home rang busy Thursday afternoon, and he could not be reached for comment.
Sprinkle was sworn in as police chief of the town 8 miles east of Evansville in January 2005.
