Newburgh Police DepartmentNEWBURGH, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana police chief has resigned following a five-day suspension without pay.
The Newburgh Police Merit Commission announced the resignation of Chief Brett Sprinkle during a public meeting Wednesday following a closed executive session.
Commission President Tonya McGuire told the Evansville Courier & Press the panel received "work performance issues" concerns involving Sprinkle, but she declined to elaborate.
Sprinkle had been police chief since 2005 in the town 8 miles east of Evansville.
The commission named Maj. Eric Mitchell as interim chief. The department has eight officers
Calls to Sprinkle's home rang busy Thursday afternoon, and he could not be reached for comment.
