New Lab Hopes To Help Brain Injury Patients

New Lab Hopes To Help Brain Injury Patients

A unique laboratory will focus on people with brain injuries on an emotional level.  The new lab at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana appears to be a comfortable sitting room where patients, family and doctors sit and have a conversation, but behind the scenes there is technology at work researching ways to help people with serious brain injuries.

The IU InterFACE (Interactive and Functional Assessment of Communication and Emotion) Center aims to collect evidence that will help therapists work to restore emotional and behavioral deficits.

Elena Gillespie, manager of the IU InterFACE Center, says the technology does make it seem almost like science fiction.

"It's because it's wireless, this now allows us to test people in a natural environment," she said.

Equipped with cameras, microphones and wireless monitors the lab can analyze facial expressions and track eye movement.  Using advanced technology the hope is to collect interactive data that will ultimately help brain injury patients better communicate.
