New Bloomington Mental Health Court Starting Up

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — The Monroe County prosecutor says a new mental health court is aimed at keeping people mentally stable and out of trouble and the community safe.

Prosecutor Chris Gaal says the new court also should save tax dollars.

Monroe Circuit Judge Ken Todd said Friday the court will establish rewards and consequences for the people it serves. It will provide services for offenders with mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gaal said national statistics show 56 percent of prison inmates have mental health issues. Two mental health agencies will provide services to people going through the court.

The Herald-Times reports changes to Indiana's criminal code encourage communities to offer treatment and rehabilitation to low-level offenders through probation and community corrections.
