Before the language was amended yesterday in Indiana’s religious freedom law, the
president of the NCAA says the association needed to have its voice heard.

As an employer with a work force of about 500 in the state, many of divergent backgrounds,
NCAA president Mark Emmert says it was necessary to push for a change in the law’s
language before this weekend’s Final Four.

“We have a particularly young staff,” said Emmert. “These issues for young people are very different
Than they are for old codgers like me. The fact is we have to have an environment that works for us to conduct our affairs.”

For future championships outside Indiana, Emmert says the NCAA will take a closer look at
whether or not those states have statutes that allow potential discrimination.
