Motorists using the Monon Trail for quick detours around Broad Ripple street closures are putting trail users in danger.

Broad Ripple Avenue from Guilford Avenue to Winthrop Avenue has been closed since early September for construction. Indianapolis Department of Public Works Public Information Officer Imani Keith said the department is aware of the problem.

“There are signs along the trail that clearly state motor vehicles are not permitted on the trail. This action is illegal, and we are continuing to work with IMPD to identify those who trespass,” Keith said.

A more permanent solution will be implemented, but for now a plan is in place for violators.

“We will place orange barrels in front of the trail and entrances on a temporary solution to divert traffic near the broader pool intersection,” Keith said.

Stormwater and drainage upgrades are scheduled until the end of the year and then will reopen in the winter before starting up again in the spring. The multiyear project will also include a path connecting the Monon Trail to Broad Ripple Park.
