BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana reserve sheriff’s deputy has died after his car crashed into a trailer that traveled into his lane of traffic, Indiana State Police said.

Monroe County Deputy James A. Driver, 38 of Spencer was responding to a call in his Dodge Charger squad car with emergency lights and sirens activated about 4 p.m. Monday on State Road 45 southwest of Bloomington when he struck the trailer being pulled by a pickup truck driven by Christopher A. Derr, 22, of Monticello, Illinois, police said.

Derr tried to stop but lost control, police said. The impact ejected Driver from his squad car, which then rolled off the roadway. Driver died at a hospital in Bloomington.

Derr and his passengers were not injured.
