State Sen. Jim Merritt resigned Friday as chairman of the Marion County Republican Party.

In a statement Merritt says the party needs a leader who can be "laser focused" on winning back the City-County Council and the Mayor’s Office.

Many speculate Merritt resigned because he himself will try to take the mayor's office from incumbent Democrat Joe Hogsett. He says he's considering it.

Merritt held the chairman position for nearly two years. The decision is effective immediately, and a successor has not been named.
