Ryan Mears announced Wednesday he will pursue the nomination to be the next Marion County Prosecutor.
He's seeking to complete the term left by Terry Curry, who resigned earlier this week to focus on his treatment for prostate cancer.
Mears has served as Chief Trial Deputy in the prosecutor's office since 2015, and has 12 years experience as a deputy prosecutor. He became acting prosecutor, in accordance with state law, when Curry stepped down.
“In the past four years as Chief Trial Deputy, I have worked with local officials and community members to bring new expectations of balance and fairness to criminal justice in our county,” Mears said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve as the elected Prosecutor to champion justice for victims of crime, make it a priority to support those who seek a second chance, and to walk with neighbors as we improve public safety and prosperity in our community.”
On Tuesday, Tim Moriarty declared his candidacy for the position. A caucus of Marion County Democratic Precinct Committeepersons will elect an individual to fulfill the term through Dec. 31, 2022.
