stock photoINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marion County law enforcement agencies have started a 311 line for cellphone users requesting non-emergency help.
The sheriff's department says the county is the first in Indiana to implement 311 service for cellphone users. Baltimore, Chicago, Las Vegas and New Orleans also have it.
It says about 60 percent of calls made to the Marion County Sheriff's 911 Center are not true emergencies. Non-emergency calls to 911 can slow service to those facing real emergencies.
It says 311 can be used to report lost or stolen property, noise complaints, fraud and identity theft reports and other non-emergencies.
