Local Philanthropy School Reporting On Giving Tuesday

Local Philanthropy School Reporting On Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday only began two years ago, but the movement is quickly gaining momentum.  The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the Case Foundation are partnering for a research project focusing on the impact of #Giving Tuesday.

Director of Research at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Una Osili says they reached out to many groups to help determine a dollar amount.

"We have basically set up working arrangements with several data partners around the country that together account for a lot of the giving that's taking place online." explains Osili.

Social media giving trends, the number and age of people participating and non-profit reports will also be figured into the findings.  Later this month the research team will compile a report on how #Giving Tuesday is affecting overall giving behavior.

Osili says currently there's no comprehensive data resource for #Giving Tuesday.

"Athough a lot of organizations have reported on data there isn't one organization like the National Retail Foundation or someone else that is kind of the go-to for that overall number," says Osili, "so we are kind of stepping into that role."

Since 2012, around 10,000 organizations have participated in the charitable effort raising an estimated $40 million.
