Last week, the Lily Endowment awarded $1 million towards the creation of Indianapolis’ new comprehensive plan. The document is called “Plan 2020” to commemorate the city’s bicentennial.
Director of Metropolitan Development Adam Thies told a group of city leaders that work is underway.
"We are in the process of molding, shaping, and modifying it daily," he said. "Our goal is for each of you to decide that you want to be a part of the effort to attract this city's long-term future and its near-term future, as well."
The planning process will happen at Old City Hall, which is being renovated to host the meetings.
Mayor Greg Ballard says the purpose is to tie in multiple community plans to outline common goals and strategies.
"Plan 2020 is kind of connecting all the other plans that are out there," he said. "I am pretty confident that we can come up with something that pretty much everybody will agree with."
Organizers hope to present the plan to the public and have it approved by the end of 2015.
"The intent is create the type of city where young people and their children will want to live," said Ballard. "That's really what this is all about right? Attracting the families and businesses into the city is really what we are trying to do."
