Indy Free Tax Prep Kicks Off Season

Workers get ready to help people get signed up for Indy Free Tax Prep.

Workers get ready to help people get signed up for Indy Free Tax Prep.

An annual program that helps people with their taxes kicked off Wednesday.

Indy Free Tax Prep helped 6,600 residents with their tax returns last year.  A network of city, businesses and nonprofits in Central Indiana offers the service.

It is available to individuals and families who earn less than $66,000 a year. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett says it helps people get their largest possible refunds.

"Receive all the tax credits, all the deductions, for which they qualify," says Hogsett.

United Way of Central Indiana President Ann Murtlow says taxes can be intimidating.

"It makes something that could be very difficult and very stressful, easy for people who need it," says Murtlow.

Last year more than 250 volunteers helped 6,600 people file through the free program. Tax day is April 15.
