Indianapolis is canceling a cricket tournament planned for August due to what city leaders say is breakdown in communication with the hosting organization.
Mayor Greg Ballard's office announced Friday that Indianapolis is terminating its contract with the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) to host the U.S. National Cricket Championships August 21-24.
The city says USACA was inadequate in its communication and that was jeopardizing the event.
“Indy greatly values its well-earned reputation of hosting outstanding national and international sporting events. The decision was made to cancel the tournament because factors outside of the city’s control were putting our ability to host a successful tournament at risk,” said Ballard. “The City looks forward to helping grow cricket in the United States and also using the World Sports Park to showcase many other great sports such as soccer, rugby and lacrosse.”
Indianapolis had planned to host the tournament for the next three years.
Last month, WFYI reported on USACA's financial troubles. The organization is reportedly millions of dollars in debt.
The tournament was going to be held at the World Sports Park, which has been criticized by some.
The more than $5 million project received push back from those wanting the RebuildIndy fund money to go elsewhere, such as public safety.
Ballard says the decision will not impact development of the World Sports Park where construction is to be completed in August.
