The City of Indianapolis will take over management of a historic park at the site of the Indiana War Memorial Plaza.
University Park is in the southernmost square block of the War Memorial Plaza in downtown Indianapolis. The park is one of the city’s oldest and is managed by the Indiana War Memorials Commission.
An agreement between the city and the commission will allow Indy Parks to make moves to improve public safety. Indy Parks rules prohibit alcohol and drugs, the discharge of firearms and limits visiting hours from dusk to dawn. There will also be a mobile Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department camera placed at the park.
“Through this partnership with the Indiana War Memorials Commission, we can further enhance one of Downtown’s best community greenspaces, ensuring it is safe, clean, and welcoming for all,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement.
Adorned with statues of presidents and fountains, University Park was opened in the years following the Civil War. The state will still own the property.
