Indianapolis Rental Assistance Program To Reopen

Indianapolis will reopen its rental assistance program and resume processing funds for renters who have been affected economically by COVID-19, starting April 5.

The resumption of the program comes as a federal eviction moratorium is extended through June. The CDC order on evictions was set to expire at the end of this month.

The $30 million for the program had already been allocated through CARES Act funding last year. Shifting federal guidelines delayed its reopening earlier this year.

In an email Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the move will help more residents. “Today’s announcement will extend resources to thousands more, helping reduce a major economic stressor and boosting housing stability,” he said.

Indianapolis has distributed $33.8 million in rental assistance since the pandemic began. Nearly 16,000 households have been helped. Residents are encouraged to submit information now to an existing waitlist.

The city is expecting more federal funding for COVID-19 relief through the newly passed American Rescue Plan.
