Indiana House Passes Bill Lifting Ban on Sunday Alcohol Sales

Indiana House Passes Bill Lifting Ban on Sunday Alcohol Sales

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana House committee has approved a bill that would lift the ban on Sunday carry-out alcohol sales while also placing new restrictions on grocery stores and pharmacies.

The House Public Policy Committee, voting 10-2 Wednesday, made history as the first to approve the perennial legislative proposal but many parties expressed concerns that the bill has lost its original intent.

In addition to lifting the ban on Sunday sales, the measure also places restrictions on grocery stores and pharmacies that originally supported the legislation. Restrictions include requiring designated areas for beer and wine sales and placing liquor behind counters.

Grocery chains say the change is a "liquor store wish list" that mandates outdated barriers to store design and merchandizing, while package liquor stores say the change is good public policy.
