Northern Indiana businessman Kip Tom has been confirmed as the country's new ambassador of agriculture at the United Nations

LEESBURG, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana businessman has been confirmed as the country's new ambassador of agriculture at the United Nations.

The U.S. Senate approved Kip Tom's nomination in a voice vote Thursday. Tom is chief executive at Tom Farms, which is based in Leesburg in Kosciusko (kahs-ee-AHS'-koh) County. The farm grows corn and soybeans in seven northern Indiana counties.

He will be based in Rome representing the United States at the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. President Donald Trump nominated Tom for the position last year.

Tom told a Senate committee that coping with climate change would be one of his priorities as ambassador.

Tom ran in the 2016 Republican primary for Congress in northeastern Indiana's 3rd District, losing to U.S. Rep. Jim Banks.

GOP US Rep. Spartz, of Indiana, charged with bringing gun through airport security, officials say

Authorities say Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz has been charged with bringing a firearm through airport security. Airport officials said Monday she was charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor. Spartz's office says she was traveling to Europe and mistakenly carried an unloaded handgun in the pocket of her suitcase while going through security at Washington Dulles International Airport. Spartz is a staunch Second Amendment Republican representing central Indiana. She won her primary in May after saying last year that she would retire from congress. The charge carries up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
