An inaugural event for wedding and vow renewal ceremonies was held this week outside the City-County Building – and pets were allowed.

Lugar Plaza served as the site for more than 20 ceremonies that also raised money for animals.  The Paws and Promises wedding event was conceived by Marion County Clerk Kate Sweeney Bell.

“It’s important to show our community that we want to provide more than summons, that we want to provide more than the records we keep,” Sweeney Bell said. “We issue marriage licenses, and one of the beautiful things about being clerk is that it allows me the privilege of performing wedding ceremonies.”

Five other judges volunteered their time to help marry people.  Dogs were also allowed at the outside services, and money raised will go to the Friends of Indy Animals.

Sherry and Gary Ruble heard about the specialized weddings when they went to apply for their license.  They were married with their dog Sam by their side.

“We thought it would be a very unique opportunity, and Sam – I thought he would enjoy it as well,” Gary Ruble said. “It’s a beautiful setting out here as well.”

The Lugar Plaza underwent renovations to provide more public space that includes the Cultural Trail, seating and art installations. This summer, the plaza also features a pop-up dog park.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services was also onsite for the wedding event and offered adoptions.

The clerk’s office plans to offer the event again next year.
