The driver of a vehicle was shot by police Thursday after the vehicle pinned the officer against a building during a welfare check outside the CVS at 16th and Meridian streets, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
This is the 12th officer involved shooting in Indianapolis this year. IMPD is currently involved in a Department of Justice review of police-involved shooting incidents after a spike in shootings last year.
According to a department release: around 4:15 p.m. officers responded to a welfare check of a person inside a vehicle at pharmacy drive-thru lane.
Officers tried to gain the man's attention. After roughly four minutes, the man opened a window and spoke with one of the officers and unlocked the passenger door. The man got out of the vehicle, then got back inside.
The department said officers attempted to further engage with him, the suspect reversed his vehicle, injuring one officer by pinning him against the CVS building with the driver’s door. The second officer, near the passenger side, then shot the driver.
The driver exited the vehicle and was handcuffed. An IMPD officer then applied a tourniquet to the suspect’s arm, according to the department.
Emergency responders transported the driver to an area hospital in stable condition.
The suspect driver was also taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The officer that was struck by the vehicle was at a local hospital in good conditionRoadways near 16th and Meridian streets were closed Thursday evening.
