The driver of a vehicle was shot by police Thursday after the vehicle struck another officer during a welfare check outside the CVS at 16th and Meridian streets, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Around 4 p.m. officers responded to a welfare check of a person inside a vehicle in the parking lot near the pharmacy.
“The driver of that vehicle struck one of the officers, a second officer did discharge his firearm striking the driver or suspect,” said IMPD public information officer William Young. “EMS arrived shortly thereafter.”
Emergency responders transported the driver to an area hospital in stable condition. The officer that was struck was at a local hospital in good condition, Young said.
Roadways near 16th and Meridian streets will be closed Thursday evening as the investigation continues.
“We'll be out here for some time trying to piece together exactly what occurred,” Young said. “We're asking folks to avoid the area.”
No other suspects are being sought, Young said.
IMPD is currently involved in a Department of Justice review of police-involved shooting incidents after a spike in shootings last year. This is the 12th officer involved shooting in Indianapolis this year.
