INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a veteran officer has died after exchanging gunfire with a person in an alley.
Police say 51-year-old Officer Perry Renn was pronounced dead at a hospital following the 9:30 p.m. Saturday shooting.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Police spokesman Lt. Christopher Bailey tells The Associated Press that Renn and another officer responded to a call about shots being fired and went to the alley, where they exchanged shots with the suspect. Bailey says 25-year-old suspect Major Davis Jr., also was shot and remains in critical condition.
An investigation is ongoing.
The shootings are the latest in a violent year for Indianapolis, which is on track to rival its record of 162 homicides, set in 1998. A shooting in a bar-hopping Indianapolis neighborhood injured seven people early Saturday.
