In recent weeks, Puerto Rico has suffered dozens of earthquakes – the strongest one with a magnitude of 6.4 – leaving the residents of the island without electricity, some without water and hundreds have lost their homes.
Barbara Laboy, a native from Puerto Rico living in Indianapolis, is working with her husband to help send help in the form of supplies to Puerto Rico.
“Bueno ahora mismo yo tengo familia durmiendo en parques,” Laboy says. "[Well, right now I have family sleeping in parks.]"
Right now, the focus is on collecting supplies for babies, like diapers, bedding, and hygiene supplies.
On Sunday starting at noon, various locations will accept donations in Indianapolis, including:
- Restaurante Los Patios
- El Bembe Criollo. Puerto Rican Restaurant
- Church New Road 65
- John Knox Prebysterian Church
- Home Decor Lopez
Laboy says she's working to get other donation sites across the state, including in Evansville and Fort Wayne.
The American Red Cross, Mercy Corps, and the Salvation Army are also collecting money Puerto Rico.
