Winter Weather Week kicks off in Indiana just as some of this year’s strongest storms roll through the state. November is a month when Hoosiers typically expect to be dealing with snow and ice, but tornadoes are not rare this time of year.
Meteorologist Joseph Nield says Indiana actually experiences two annual tornado seasons.
"Your winds are starting to strengthen, your jet stream is starting to get further south," says Nield.
The autumn season is more sporadic but can be just as devastating. That’s why it’s so important to be prepared.
Snow, ice and extreme cold can be equally dangerous and having a plan is vital. Be informed, build a kit and get involved are some simple steps Hoosiers can take to stay safe. Also keep in mind proper home heating methods and preparing your car for winter weather.
Elia James with the Indianapolis Department of Public Safety says residents should also think about the needs of different people in their communities.
"Some of the messaging that went out yesterday went out in English and in Spanish," says James. A recent survey from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security finds more than half of households in Indiana may not be prepared for widespread emergency.
