SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A house built for famed Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne in South Bend two years before he died in a 1931 airplane crash is up for sale.
Encore Sotheby's International Realty broker Jay O'Neil tells the South Bend Tribune the 4,180-square-foot, four-bedroom home is listed at $500,000. The wake for Rockne was held in the English Tudor-style home.
Rockne coached the Irish for 13 seasons starting in 1918, posting a record of 105-12-5 while winning national championships in 1924, 1929 and 1930. His winning percentage remains the best in college football.
Rockne's widow, Bonnie, and family lived in the house until her death in 1956. The current owners were family friends of the Rocknes and bought the home from the Rockne estate the next year.
