High Water Closes Monroe Lake Beaches For Holiday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Visitors to Indiana's largest reservoir won't be able to enjoy its beaches during the Memorial Day weekend. Hgh water has prompted officials to close them down for now.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says recent rains and river levels downstream have forced the Army Corps of Engineers to restrict the outflow at Monroe Lake's dam, resulting in high water at the reservoir near Bloomington.

Because those conditions won't change anytime soon, the DNR says Monroe Lake's beaches at the Fairfax and Paynetown state recreation areas will remain closed during the holiday weekend.

All boat ramps remain open at the 11,000-acre lake.
