Twenty-five candidates are on the ballot to take one of the 14 seats open on Hamilton County school boards in the Nov. 5 election.
School boards have four core responsibilities: adopting policies, approval of the annual budget and overall fiscal oversight, setting goals and hiring and evaluating the district’s superintendent.
School board members, which are non-partisan elected positions, don’t oversee day-to-day operations of school districts. Candidates for at-large seats represent all residents within the district’s boundaries.
The boundaries of Sheridan Community Schools covers part of both Hamilton and Boone counties.
Most school boards have five or seven members at a time, with staggered election years.
The deadline for candidates to declare their candidacy with the Hamilton County Election Board was June 20. Candidates have until noon on July 15 to withdraw from the general election.
Winners of the 2024 election will start their terms in January.
