Gun Permit System To Go Online - Only

INDIANAPOLIS – Hoosiers seeking a gun permit will no longer be able to apply using paper after a new electronic system goes online Oct. 1.

The system – available at the Indiana State Police website at in.gov/isp – will also give those with existing gun permits new options for renewals and address changes.

“The new electronic application is designed to streamline the application process for both the applicant and law enforcement officials” said Major Mike White, the state police’s assistant chief of staff for communication and information systems. “This system is designed to be user friendly and will make the process easier for all those involved.”

New firearms permits will also be hard plastic, instead of the paper ones now issued. The permits will be similar to driver’s licenses and will be much more resistant to wear and tear, said Rich Myers, a spokesman for the state police.

Those with lifetime permits will be able to go online after Oct. 1 to request a new plastic card. However, current permit holders are not required to obtain a new card until theirs expire.

The state issued more than 2 million firearms permits last year.
