Greenwood officials approved a contract Tuesday to clear the way for part of the city’s downtown revitalization plan.
The Greenwood Redevelopment Commission awarded a $1.7 million contract to demolish most of the former Greenwood Middle School. The city purchased the 19-acre property in 2017.
The school’s gymnasium will be preserved and repurposed as a new downtown fieldhouse. Other projects planned for the site include apartments and townhomes, retail and office space and nearly 10 acres of “upgraded open space.” The city says plans at this point are still conceptual as officials continue discussions with private developers.
Demolition of the former school building and stabilization of the gymnasium is expected to last about six months.
