Grant Funding To Help Those Facing Housing Instability

A $250,000 grant for Indiana Legal Services will help more Hoosiers facing housing insecurity. The funds from the Lilly Endowment will allow ILS to hire more staff to address issues related to eviction during the pandemic.

A special focus will be on efforts to find safe housing for families experiencing domestic violence. ILS Executive Director Jon Laramore said the past year has put a strain on many, mainly because of job loss.

“COVID has really exasperated the inability of families to find safe, affordable housing,” Laramore said.

Evictions are taking place despite a federal moratorium. Laramore said these funds may help connect more people.

“Often lawyers are necessary to help tenants take advantage of the moratorium because the information that has to be supplied to fall within the moratorium is complex,” Laramore said.

The moratorium on evictions has been extended through March 31. ILS will continue to work with the city of Indianapolis to represent clients facing a housing crisis.
