Free Tax Program Kicks Off In Indianapolis

Indianapolis residents who qualify can start having their taxes done thanks to an ongoing city program called Indy Free Tax Prep

On Friday, city leaders, tax preparers and local businesses came together for the kick-off event at Broad Ripple Park.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is offered by the IRS and relies on people who give their time and skills to help others.

The First Lady of Indianapolis, Winnie Ballard, is actively involved with the program as part of Indy's Campaign for Financial Fitness, helping low and moderate income people connect with resources.

This is the second year the project has teamed with Indy Parks, providing convenient locations throughout the city.

"We want the neighborhood to use their own Indy Parks center and they don't have to travel," explains Ballard, "and also my goal is to recruit volunteers that live in say Broad Ripple and they can just prepare here."

Last season, more than 6,000 Marion County residents had their tax returns prepared at no cost.  Find out how to take advantage of the program by calling Connect to Help 211.
