Four SWAT Officers Wounded in Shootout

Four Indianapolis SWAT Team officers are recovering after being shot Wednesday night while serving a warrant on Indianapolis’ southeast side.

Two remained hospitalized, but all are expected to make a full recovery.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m.

Inside the home, Andrew Sizemore saw them approaching using a surveillance system.  He then fired multiple rounds hitting the SWAT team members.

"Four of the SWAT officers were hit pretty early in this incident," said Major Ted Fries.  "All four continued on in their mission and got done what they were supposed to get done.  It really speaks to their tough mindedness."

Sizemore was killed during the shootout, but Fries says the operation was more dangerous because of the cameras.

"Anytime that you are going to be compromised before your entry it's going to make things a little more difficult, a lot more difficult and dangerous," he said.  "The occupant would obviously be ready for entry and can take either defensive measures or violent measures as happened in this case."

Chief Rick Hite says attacks on police are an attack on the community at-large.

"We are not stopping," said Hite.  "It really depends on whether or not the bad guys get it.  We are serious about our business. We are professionals.  We are ready to take on any task, but it's up to them to decide when enough is enough because we have already made the decision that enough is enough. Police recovered heroin, stolen property, cash, 13 guns and pills which combined are worth more than $500,000.

The five men arrested range from 20- to 62-years old and were taken in for distribution and possession of drugs and visiting a common nuisance.

They are:

• Robert Morgan, 62, arrested for dealing a controlled substance

• Justin Williams, 24, arrested for visiting a common nuisance

• Paul Beard, 21, arrested for possession of a control substance

• Jacob Gobel, 20, arrested for visiting a common nuisance

• Andrew Spurlock, 23, arrested for visiting a common nuisance

Police say none of them fired shots.
