Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese Releases List Of Credibly Accused Priests, Deacon

The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend Tuesday published the names of 18 priests and deacons credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.

A total of 63 credible allegations are cited with individual numbers attributed to each of the accused. The list was compiled by both Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and the Diocesan Review Board, which reviews allegations of sexual abuse.

According to the Diocese, each accusation was thoroughly investigated by the Review Board, and had to be unanimously accepted as more than likely true by both the Board and Rhoades.

The majority of the 18 priests and deacons named in the list were associated with Northern Indiana parishes. Of those, eight are deceased and two are incarcerated, no whereabouts are given for the rest, but ten have been removed from the ministry. No dates of when accusations took place or if any consequences resulted of those allegations, were given.

Rhoades promised the list of names during a news conference last month regarding the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report on child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, released just days prior. Rhoades was recently cleared of misconduct allegations in Pennsylvania.

The Diocese said in an online statement that it “stands firm in its commitment to investigate any allegation of sexual abuse by a member of the clergy and to listen to and support anyone who has been abused.”
