Flanner House Elementary — the Indianapolis charter school at the center of a cheating scandal —closes its doors for good Thursday. Mayor Greg Ballard's office says all of its students have found new schools.
Most of the school’s 176 students transferred after the board voted Aug. 20 to close the school. City officials say there are fewer than 10 students still enrolled as of today.
"It's our understanding that all of them have already enrolled in new schools and are just choosing to wait to actually attend the school until tomorrow," says Brandon Brown, Indianapolis charter schools director.
Brown says his office has been in regular contact with affected families and will continue to lend support as students move to new schools.
"We're providing complete assistance with uniform costs and any school supply costs as well," says Brown. "Then we're working with receiving schools to make the transition process as smooth as possible."
The Mayor’s office and state officials opened an investigation after a 42-percent increase in the school’s ISTEP passing rate in 20-13. Flanner’s board voted to close after the cheating scandal became public.
