The family of Chris Beaty filed suit against the city of Indianapolis and city leaders. Beaty was killed May 30, 2020 during rioting that broke out after social justice protests in downtown Indianapolis.

Beaty tried to assist a person being robbed when he was shot and killed. The lawsuit names the city, Mayor Joe Hogsett, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and Chief Randal Taylor and alleges neglect to provide public safety.

The complaint says IMPD was not properly trained and a failure to act added to increased violence. Beaty’s mother Debra Cooper seeks damages related to his death. Beaty was an Indianapolis businessman and former Indiana University football player.

Another 18-year old man was also shot and killed that night.
