Registration Open For Library's 'Everyday Superheroes' Summer Reading Program

Registration Open For Library's 'Everyday Superheroes' Summer Reading Program

The Indianapolis Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is underway.

This year’s theme is “Everyday Superheroes.”

“We are going to celebrate the universal stories of fictional and nonfictional superheroes -- so be it Superman or Oprah,” says Teen Programming Specialist Kirsten Weaver.

Registration is open at any library branch to earn points that can be exchanged for prizes.  The more books participants read during the program, the more points they earn.

Prizes include licensed comic book hero items, paperback books, White Castle coupons, and passes to the Indianapolis Zoo, Eiteljorg Museum, Symphony on the Prairie, Indy Parks pools, and Indiana Fever and Indianapolis Indians games (some are buy one, get one free). Summer readers can also win one of two college savings accounts worth $529 from CollegeChoice CD.

Summer readers can become “Everyday Superheroes” by contributing to Books for Youth, a partnership with the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Department of Child Services to collect 5,000 books to give to children in foster care with a backpack filled with 25 age-appropriate books. Participants can use their reading points to select and donate prize books or new and gently used books from home.

More than 48,000 children and families read over 949,000 books during the 2017 summer reading program.
