FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) — Residents in a central Indiana city will get an update from federal officials next month about sewer work near a tainted industrial site.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a Dec. 3 open house at the Johnson County Library's Franklin Branch to discuss a groundwater treatment pilot study and sewer and soil work near the site of a plant once operated by electronics manufacturer Amphenol Corp.

EPA and Indiana Department of Environmental Management staffers will be on hand with engineering consultants to answer the public’s questions in the city about 25 miles south of Indianapolis.

Tests have confirmed that groundwater and sewer vapors in the community have cancer-causing chemicals at levels exceeding Indiana's safe limits.

The sewer project involves replacing or re-lining damaged sewers and removing contamination from the Amphenol site.

GOP US Rep. Spartz, of Indiana, charged with bringing gun through airport security, officials say

Authorities say Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz has been charged with bringing a firearm through airport security. Airport officials said Monday she was charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor. Spartz's office says she was traveling to Europe and mistakenly carried an unloaded handgun in the pocket of her suitcase while going through security at Washington Dulles International Airport. Spartz is a staunch Second Amendment Republican representing central Indiana. She won her primary in May after saying last year that she would retire from congress. The charge carries up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
