Democrats File For Auditor, Treasurer Races

Indiana Democrats hope to secure victories in state treasurer and auditor races for the first time in decades. And two candidates stepped up to run just a little more than week before the party convention, where they’ll be officially nominated.

Joselyn Whitticker is a small business owner and former school teacher and administrator. And she says that managerial experience is a key asset she’d bring as state auditor. The NAACP branch leader says she’s focused on accountability and transparency – and she’ll draw on her background from her time on the Marion, Indiana Common Council.

“I was the person who found the discrepancies with our tax increment financing,” Whitticker says.

Whitticker and state treasurer candidate John Aguilera both talk about the one-party control of state government – Republicans hold all state-level offices and supermajorities in the legislature. Aguilera served four terms in the Indiana House and sat on the Lake County Council. The former Indiana Latino Institute president says Hoosiers want more diversity in office.

“This is about making sure that when I take a look at the pictures of the staff of that organization, that it reflects the community,” Aguilera says.

Incumbent Republicans Kelly Mitchell and Tera Klutz are the candidates for Indiana Treasurer and Auditor, respectively. 

Democrats haven’t won a race for auditor since 1982, and for treasurer since 1974.
