Contracts for the first of nine projects to improve and build Indianapolis greenways have been awarded.
The Pleasant Run Greenway upgrades are part of Circle City Forward. The initiative invests more than $200 million city-wide improvements that target outdated facilities, crumbling roads, greenways and parks.
Phase three, announced last fall, commits $25 million to trails across the city. Two contracts worth $800,000 were awarded toDB Engineering to build out the new Pleasant Run Greenway.
Indianapolis Department of Public Works Spokesman Ben Easley said the path will cover miles of city space.
“It connects Garfield Park to Ellenberger Park and all of the different neighborhoods in between there and then it even pushes further west,” he said, “extending the trail all the way to Bluff Road.”
The total project is expected to cost more than $6 million and will be completed in phases. Pleasant Run Greenways will connect schools, amenities and other parks.
Easley said the first phase of work will focus on design and rehabilitation efforts.
“That includes widening some areas where possible and definitely upgrading the current pavement that’s there and smoothing out any weird grade changes,” Easley said.
The rehab includes approximately 25,750 linear feet of existing trail, and13,500 linear feet of new trail.
Upgrades will make all crossings ADA accessible.
The trail is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.
Other trails set for improvement include the Pogue's Run Trail; a second phase of the Eagle Creek Trail and the Grassy Creek Trail.
