City leaders and law enforcement officials celebrated the opening of the new Community Justice Campus on Monday morning in Indianapolis’ southeastern Twin Aire neighborhood.

The $600 million facility will house the Marion County Sheriff’s office, Marion Superior Court, a new jail, and a mental health and substance abuse clinic.

City-County Council President Vop Osili says the campus marks a cultural shift towards rehabilitation.

“One centered on valuing the humanity of incarcerated persons and views the period of incarceration as one during which those within can receive help to make better choices when they leave,” Osili said. “And because of that, in the end, we create a safer and more just community for us all.”

The new jail is a step up from the rundown, 60-year-old downtown facility, with space for 500 more people. The Hogsett administration introduced the Community Justice Campus in 2016.
