Carney Running For Marion Co. Sheriff

Carney Running For Marion Co. Sheriff

A 25-year Special Agent for the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives in Indianapolis is running for Marion County Sheriff.

Republican Emmitt Carney is a 31-year law enforcement veteran, also having served as a state trooper with the Kentucky State Police.

He says that experience has prepared him for Sheriff.

"I've always been about public safety.  I was a state trooper.  I know what it's like to work with people on the state and local level," he said.   "What I would try to do different is one, be a good partner with all  the other agencies.  I would try to figure out a way to keep people out of the jail, rather than having them come in and try to implement some programs that would help educate and deter some of these kids from getting into trouble."

Democrats Mark Brown and current Sheriff John Layton will join Carney on the 2014 ballot.  Carney says two aspects separate him from the others.

"One, the federal experience that I have with the different agencies.  I've been the guy that's always gotten along.  I've been partners with everybody," he said.  "At the end of the day, you may not always agree, but you have to come together for the good of the order and I think you've got to have the ability to be able to reach across lines or department boundaries and work with those to make it work and sometimes it takes a little bit of give."
