Carmel is now taking applications for the 2014 Arts Grants which are in line with the city’s overall investment in the arts.
Carmel has become a center for the arts in Central Indiana and the move has been well orchestrated. Boosting tourism and the economy, the arts have helped the city attract families and local businesses.
Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard says this marks the 10th year the city has helped finance the local arts community.
"We dedicate 1 percent of our general revenue to support the arts," says Brainard, "It's one penny out of a dollar, I point out to people that have questions about it."
Brainard says this year around $665,000 is being allotted and non-profit arts groups are encouraged to apply by Feb. 28.
"Everything from professional dance troupes, theater to professional dance," says Brainard, "volunteer groups where citizens can acutally participate."
Since the creation of the Arts and Design District, Carmel has had more than 350,000 visitors every year and that number is growing.
